Dancing With Foxes

Written on August 25, 1999

During my recent trip to Hokkaido, I had a fantastic encounter with a wild fox. I was driving my rental car down an old logging road through the forest. I happened upon a clearing. In the middle of this clearing was a fox. I immediately stopped and started taking pictures from my car. As the fox didn’t seem to mind my being there, I got out of the car to get a closer look. As I approached I noticed that he was catching grasshoppers for his diner. I followed him around trying to help him with his quest. After a long time he tired and lay down right in front of me for a nap. I have never had a wild animal act so relaxed in my presence. It was a wonderful experience.
